“I knew I needed to do more to lower my cholesterol. Seeing how a simple addition to my already healthy diet could help in just a few weeks was a great motivator.”
Sue Bellamy, a 56-year-old nursery nurse at the Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust knew the importance of knowing her cholesterol number as she had a family history of high cholesterol and her father had suffered a heart attack.
Despite this, and having previously tested for high cholesterol, it had been nearly a year since her last cholesterol test. So when the Trust hosted a cholesterol testing event supported by Flora ProActiv, she saw that as an opportunity to know her number and – when her test revealed high cholesterol – she knew that it wasn’t something she could ignore.
Sue decided to take action and control her heart health and signed up for the Flora ProActiv 21 Day Challenge. As part of this, in addition to her already healthy diet and regular exercise, she started consuming plant sterols – proven to help lower cholesterol by 7-10% in only 2-3 weeks*.
After 21 days Sue had her cholesterol levels re-checked.
“My total cholesterol went from 6.38 to 5.43 and I was thrilled. I am already an avid cyclist – sometimes up to 70 miles per week – and watched what I ate – but I knew I had to make other changes to help lower my cholesterol. I had heard about plant sterols and knew people who were taking them for their cholesterol, but I wasn’t sure if it was the right approach for me. Taking part in Flora ProActiv’s 21 Day Challenge and seeing how just a simple change to my diet can deliver results in such a short time is the motivation I need to keep up with exercises regimen and continue to include plant sterols in my already healthy diet to help manage my cholesterol”.
*Flora ProActiv contains plant sterols. Plant sterols have been shown to lower blood cholesterol. High cholesterol is a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease. Consuming 1.5-2.4g of plant sterols per day can lower cholesterol by 7-10% in 2-3 weeks when consumed as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle with sufficient fruit and vegetables.
